The question above is one that I asked frequently of the people who worked for me, and it was always a springboard for good discussions usually about self-improvement. I encourage you to use this probe in your efforts to develop the skills of the people on your team particularly those in or on their way to leadership roles. This advice may be more important today than any time in recent memory.
Artificial Intelligence is entering our world at a breakneck pace and at this point we only have vague ideas about where it will all lead. It is pretty clear that AI will impact many if not most careers, so it is imperative that we keep ourselves well informed. So how are we going to stay in front of current developments?
Read everything you can on the topic.
- Peruse newspapers, both local and national. In the business world, I suggest the Wall Street Journal, which covers this topic regularly.
- When you find an article of real interest, drill down on the author’s name to see if there is more available
- Stay plugged into AI on your internet news feeds and seek more about the articles and authors you learn from.
- Seek books on the topic, but at the current rate of change, be sure the books are current — older books may already be obsolete.
Stay connected with all the people you know who have a good grasp of the topic.
- Spend time with those you know who have a good grasp of the subject — set up a breakfast, lunch, or coffee and have a good discussion.
- Keep your eyes open for events covering AI in your community and sign up. You will likely meet and get to know others who are also in an AI learning mode.
- If you are really ambitious, you might rally a group of others in an AI learning mode and have periodic discussions.
Artificial Intelligence is here and it is gaining importance in most every aspect of business so we all need to stay as up to date as possible.
